This keynote challenges the comfortable but misleading idea that AI literacy is simply about learning how to use tools. It argues that true AI literacy is about understanding power, limits, and consequences—who designs AI systems, what assumptions are embedded in them, and how they reshape knowledge, work, and learning.Grounded in current research on AI in education, the talk reframes AI literacy as a multidimensional competence encompassing technical awareness, critical data literacy, ethical judgment, and human agency. Particular attention is paid to the risks of uncritical adoption: automation bias, over-reliance on generative systems, erosion of academic integrity, and the quiet normalisation of opaque decision-making.
The keynote moves from theory to practice by offering concrete examples of how AI literacy can be embedded across curricula not as a standalone topic, but as a transversal competence linked to assessment, creativity, research practices, and digital citizenship. It questions checklist-based frameworks and instead proposes a developmental approach that grows with learners’ cognitive and disciplinary maturity.
Designed for academics, educators, and institutional leaders, the session provides a clear-eyed roadmap for moving beyond AI anxiety and superficial “skills training” toward a critical, ethical, and future-facing model of AI literacy in higher education.
