Abstract
This chapter introduces corpus linguistics as a methodology for analysing the language of economic and financial news journalistic output. It provides an overview of the area and explains what a corpus is, as well as how to design and build DIY corpora. The remainder of the chapter deals with the key underlying concepts of the practical tools used to analyse corpora, as well as illustrating the output of these tools and discussing how we might go about interpreting the output. The value of combined journalistic and linguistic perspectives in understanding and interpreting the (de)construction of news discourse is an underlying theme of the chapter, which concludes that more journalists who can think linguistically and critically about language and more linguists who understand how journalism works are needed.
