Using Lesson Study to unpack the potential of the New Primary Mathematics Curriculum: Statistics and Geometry

Activity: Conference Presentations, Speaking Events & WorkshopsWorkshop

Description

Guide pre-service teachers through two cycles of Lesson Study in the role of facilitator and knowledgeable other. Supporting pre-service teachers to plan, implement and reflect on research lessons that target specific pedagogical practices and mathematical proficiencies, thus facilitating them to take the role of curriculum developers.

Intentional exploration of new foci within the Primary Mathematics Curriculum (2023) (e.g., increased focus on transformations) to inform our practice (module, programme level) and support pre-service and in-service primary teachers to develop appropriate mathematics knowledge for teaching. We are presently working on writing practitioner papers unpacking innovative child-centred units of instruction focusing on developing primary children’s understandings of primary curriculum concepts including:
1. Transformations (flip, turn, slide)
2. Co-ordinates
3. Statistics (Using local bee data to promote ‘data talks’ and conceptual understanding of the median)
